Long and Clever Riddles

The host of a game show offers the guest a choice of three doors. Behind one is a expensive car, but behind the other two are goats. After you have chosen one door, he reveals one of the other two doors behind which is a goat (he wouldn’t reveal a car). Now he gives you the chance to switch to the other unrevealed door or stay at your initial choice. You will then get what is behind that door. You cannot hear the goats from behind the doors, or in any way know which door has the prize. Should you stay, or switch, or doesn’t it matter?

Answer
You better switch! Your first choice has a 1/3 chance of having the car, and that does not change. The other two doors HAD a combined chance of 2/3, but now a Goat has been revealed behind one, all the 2/3 chance is with the other door.

Four men walk into the desert. Suddenly all four are simultaneously knocked out. They awake buried to their heads in the sand unable to look anywhere but straight ahead. They are positioned so that each man sees another’s head before him.

However between the first and second man there is a separating wall. So the first man sees only desert. The second man sees only wall. The third man sees another’s head and a wall. The fourth man sees two heads and a wall.

On top of each mans head is a hat. The underside of each cap is black, but the outside of each cap is either blue or white. Before any of the men can speak, their captors tell them if they speak, they die.

However, if any of them can guess the color of their cap on the first try they go free. The captors tell them that there are two blue caps and two white caps. Being an omniscient observer of the situation, we know that the order of the caps are: blue, white, blue, white.

So knowing the perspective of each man in the sand, and that they can only see the color of caps/wall/desert in front of them, which of the four men knows for certain the color of his own cap. More importantly: why?

Answer
The third man. This is because he knows there are only two of each color cap. If the man behind him (the fourth man) saw two caps that were the same color in front of him, he would know that his own must be the opposite.

However, because the caps alternate in color. The fourth man has only a 50% chance of getting his hat color correct, so therefore he stays quiet. The third man realizes that the fourth man is quiet because he must not see two caps of the same color in front of him, otherwise the fourth man would say the opposite of the caps in front of him.

Therefore, the third man presumes his own cap must be the opposite of the mans in front of him, and his presumption is correct. Under this same logic, after the third man speaks his color hat, the second man, even though he sees only wall, would be the next to go free, because he knows his cap must be the opposite of whichever color the third mans cap was.

The store room of your house is locked with a certain kind of padlock that can be closed without a key but requires a key to open which you own and there is no duplicate key. You decide to move your old stuff to the storeroom. After keeping the things carefully, you lock it back again perfectly. The next day, a dead body is found in your closed store room.

Since only you have the key to the store room and you live alone, the police suspect you as the murderer. You can’t understand anything when suddenly a thought strikes your mind. There is a possible way using which the dead body could have been placed by someone else.

Can you find that way so that you can tell the police and prove yourself to be innocent?

Answer

When you were inside the room, the murderer replaced the padlock with his own one that was identical to your original padlock. When you locked the store room, you did not require a key and there was nothing abnormal for you.

When you left, the murderer opened the padlock with his key, placed the dead body inside and replaced his padlock with the original padlock back in place. He then locked it without any problem.

In the kingdom of skull, King Norse did not allow any citizen to visit the world outside. Also only a person with a proper paperwork was allowed to enter or he was sent back. A wooden bridge was what connected the kingdom to the world. The king had appointed a sharpshooter who would check every five minutes on the bridge to check. After checking, he would go back to his hut and return exactly after five minutes again. The bridge took 9 minutes to cross.  A merchant was able to escape the kingdom without harming the shooter. How did he do it?

Answer
The merchant walked across the bridge for almost five minutes when the shooter was inside the bridge. Then he turned and started walking back to the kingdom of skull. On approaching the kingdom, he was asked of papers which he never had. Thus he was sent back.

Two spies want to get in an enemy’s military base. In order to get in they have to give the correct countersign to the guard at the gate after he gives them the sign. So, they wait hidden nearby the gate so that they will overhear the countersign from another soldier.

One soldier comes and the guard gives the sign: “6”. The soldier answers “3”. The guard lets him pass. Another soldier comes. The guard says “12” and the soldier gives the answer “6”. The guard lets him pass. So, the first spy goes at the gate and the guard says “10”.The spy, sure that he knew the answer as he was, says “5”. Immediately, the guard shoots him dead.

Then the other spy, who saw that the other spy was killed when he gave the countersign, had now understood what the right answer would be, whatever the guard’s sign was. So, he walks to the gate and the guard says “8”.The spy gives the correct answer and the guard lets him in. What was the answer that the spy gave?

Answer
5. It’s the number of letters it takes to spell the word the guard says.

A wealthy wise old woman feared that her daughter was lazy and, as a result, rather stupid. When the old woman died, her will stipulated that her assets were to be liquidated and a check was to be written for the full amount.

The check was to be placed in one of three envelopes. The other two envelopes would contain a blank piece of paper. If the daughter could determine from the writing on the envelope which envelope contained the check, she would inherit her mother’s fortune. Otherwise, the fortune would go to the old woman’s favorite charity for animals.

The daughter was not allowed to touch the envelopes. Her decision had to be made based on the writing on the envelopes. The daughter was told that only one envelope had a true statement and that the other two statements were false.

The envelopes had the following writing:
1. This envelope does not have the check.
2. This envelope has the check.
3. The second envelope does not have the check.

Which envelope should the daughter pick?

Answer
The daughter should pick envelope 1. Statements 1 and 2 are false, and the only true statement is statement 3.

If the check was in envelope 1, that would make statement 1 and statement 2 false and statement 3 would be the only true statement.

If the check was in envelope 2, both statements 1 and 2 would be true.

If the check was in envelope 3, both statements 1 and 3 wouldbe true.

A man is sitting in a pub feeling rather poor. He sees the man next to him pull a wad of £50 notes out of his wallet. He turns to the rich man and says to him, “I have an amazing talent; I know almost every song that has ever existed.”

The rich man laughs. The poor man says, “I am willing to bet you all the money you have in your wallet that I can sing a genuine song with a lady’s name of your choice in it.”

The rich man laughs again and says, “OK, how about my daughter’s name, Joanna Armstrong-Miller?” The rich man goes home poor. The poor man goes home rich.

What song did he sing?

Answer
Happy Birthday

It is Halloween and your friends dare you to go into a haunted house. You creep up to the door, a little scared wondering what is behind the door. You go in and there is a long hallway leading out into a dark musty room with three doors. You’re kind of scared once you are inside. You try to turn back, to get back outside, but when you turn around the door is closed and locked. You yell for help but there is only silence.

The room is dark and you look for a light source. You see a light switch and try to turn it on. Sadly the power is out. You are terrified but have no choice but to follow the long hallway to the three doors in the pitch black. Behind one door is a bottomless pit with no end. Behind another door is an electric chair which you must sit in. Behind the last door is a pool full of acid. You must go in one of the rooms to the danger. Which one should you go through?

Answer
You should definitely go through the electric chair. Since the power is out, when you sit in the electric chair it will have no effect on you.

There is a row of soldiers that is 1km in length and they walk with a constant speed in a straight line, in one direction. All the way at the end walks a messenger. He has to bring a message to the captain walking all the way at the beginning of the row.

The messenger starts walking past the soldiers and immediately turns around when arriving at the captain and walks back to the end of the row. When the messenger is back at the end, the whole group of soldiers have traveled a distance of 1 km.

The soldiers and captain are walking at the same constant speed. The messenger (walking faster then the soldiers) is also walking a a constant speed. You don’t know anything about time or speed. How far did the messenger travel from the end of the row to the beginning and back?

Answer
The messenger must have traveled 2km. It doesn’t matter what speed they walked at. At the beginning of the puzzle, the line is 1 km long. The general is therefore 1 km ahead of him.

The messenger must therefore travel more than 1 km to reach the general. Since the line moves 1 km forward, the end is where the beginning was. Even if he walked 1.5 km to the general, he only has to walk 0.5 km to get back to the end of the line. It goes faster going back, because now they are coming towards him, and not going away.
